Philippine pork producers opposed a proposed increase in pork imports under a lower-tariff program, saying domestic stocks were sufficient and farmgate prices were stable or falling. Corn producers supported increasing the minimum access volume allocation if it is used during the lean season rather than peak harvest, while the government was considering MAV Plus for pork and corn.
If implemented, larger lower-tariff pork allocations could increase import supply and pressure local hog prices; producers’ opposition may impede or limit that increase. Additional corn import access could ease feed supply constraints, but timing it for the lean season would reduce pressure on farmers during harvest.
