Canada’s Food Inspection Agency reported the season’s first avian influenza detection in a commercial poultry flock in British Columbia, at a facility in Chilliwack. Infected farms are typically quarantined and their flocks culled; the province has accounted for more than 10 million birds that have died or been culled in outbreaks since late 2021.
Quarantines and flock culls can reduce poultry supply and, if outbreaks spread, support chicken prices while weakening feed demand. The initial detection alone is not enough to establish a significant market impact.
