Hungary’s agriculture minister asked European commissioners to temporarily eliminate EU tariffs on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus, citing high prices and supply uncertainty for EU farmers. Fertilizer shipments from Russia to the EU fell in early 2026 after the duties took effect, and the European Commission rejected Hungary’s separate request to review restrictions on Russian gas imports.
Removing the tariffs could make Russian and Belarusian fertilizer more available to EU buyers and ease import costs, while leaving the duties in place would continue to constrain those flows. Any lower input costs could support fertilizer use and crop yields.
