Dairy producers are pushing for additional risk management reforms as milk margins remain depressed. The American Dairy Coalition says increased make allowances in the Federal Milk Marketing Order have favored processors and hit cheese-heavy regions like the Upper Midwest, and its survey suggests many farms have stayed profitable only through beef or other income.
The National Milk Producers Federation endorsed proposed improvements to Dairy Margin Coverage and Dairy Revenue Protection.
Weak Class II and cheese prices keep farm milk income under pressure, which can slow herd and output decisions and affects the milk supply available for dairy-based feed ingredients. Policy changes to margin coverage would alter farmer risk management but do not directly move near-term feed prices.
After 24 past bearish policy events, Milk (Class III) moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (33% higher; middle half -1.8% to +0.5%), and -4.6% over 20.
