CME live and feeder cattle futures ended higher on Friday November 17, 2023 after the USDA reported October cattle placements up 3.8% year over year, below analyst expectations of 4.9%. Cattle on feed on November 1 was 11.9 million head, up 1.7%, close to expectations, and October marketings fell 2.5%.
December live cattle closed at 175.750 cents per pound.
Placements below expectations reduce near-term feedlot supply and support cattle futures, while larger supplies over 700 pounds point to well-supplied markets early next year. Lower marketings suggest tighter supplies later in the spring.
