Colorado State University's Stephen Koontz reviews USDA's October 23 Cattle on Feed report, which showed feeder cattle placements into feedlots in September down 12% from a year earlier, extending declines seen since May. He expects fed-cattle marketings to be constrained into early 2027, with heavier weights only partly offsetting lower numbers.
Tight feedlot placements point to very tight fed-cattle supplies in early 2027, supporting live and feeder cattle prices. Tighter supply also means higher costs for cattle-based feed and rendering inputs for buyers.
