Twin Cities & Western Railroad was awarded $22 million in federal CRISI funding in October for rail infrastructure and grain transportation. The grant will pay for 200 new covered hopper railcars and track improvements that raise railcar capacity to 286,000 pounds.
The railroad operates over 360 miles of track in Minnesota and South Dakota.
Higher railcar capacity and better reliability can lower grain transport costs and reduce delays for shippers in the upper Midwest. The effect on prices is small and local, since the project does not change national supply or demand.
