New research from shipbroker IFCHOR GALBRAITHS finds Panamax wheat and corn shipping demand fell by 27.65 billion tonne-miles in Q3 2026 versus 2023–2025 averages. Supramax and Handysize vessels gained, as Argentine, US and Canadian grain exports replaced reduced Russian and Ukrainian shipments.
Re-routing of grain flows away from the Black Sea lengthens or shifts voyages toward the Americas, changing ocean freight costs by vessel size. Freight rate shifts can widen export basis and affect landed grain costs for feed buyers.
