USDA reopened the Columbus, NM port of entry on October 26 for cattle imports from Mexico, following earlier phased reopenings at Douglas, AZ (August 24) and Santa Teresa, NM (September 24). Horse imports resumed October 26 only through Santa Teresa, subject to inspection, treatment and a seven-day quarantine.
Reopening ports restores some Mexican feeder cattle supply to US feedlots, which eases tightness in the cattle complex, though the pace is measured and can be reversed if screwworm spreads again.
