An elk killed by a hunter on a game ranch in Pecos County, Texas, confirmed the first US wildlife case of New World screwworm. The USDA confirmed the case after domestic animals had already been found infected, with dozens of US cases identified so far.
The infestation zone boundaries are set to change in response.
Screwworm has already kept Mexican cattle imports restricted, tightening US feeder and fed cattle supplies and lifting beef prices. Spread into wildlife raises the risk of longer import restrictions and more domestic herd losses, which supports cattle prices.
