Maize prices in Karnataka, India, have risen above ₹3,000 per quintal in Bagalkot and several other markets. Drought has cut the planted area in Bagalkot sharply and damaged much of the remaining crop, while the government has reportedly barred ethanol production from sugarcane this season, shifting demand to maize.
Lower drought-hit supply combined with added ethanol demand for maize supports regional prices, which now sit well above the government support price of ₹2,410 per quintal.
