EFSA says strict enforcement of high biosecurity is the most effective way to keep H5N8 out of poultry farms. It ranks measures by farm area, such as separating wild birds from poultry, indoor housing and keeping ducks and geese apart.
The advice follows H5N8 outbreaks in European wild birds and poultry since late October 2016.
Biosecurity guidance mainly affects how farms operate and does not by itself change near-term poultry supply or feed demand. It signals that disease pressure in Europe is persisting into winter.
