USDA's September 1 stocks report showed 71.8 million bushels of US oats, down 8.6% from a year earlier and the second lowest for that date since 1975/76. Stocks made up 34.8% of 2017/18 supplies, the lowest share in four years.
December oat futures ended higher at $2.52 1/2.
Tight old-crop supplies raise the likelihood of higher US oat imports in the upcoming WASDE, which supports prices for feed buyers.
After 52 past bullish report events, OATS moved a median -2.0% over 5 sessions (33% higher; middle half -3.4% to +2.4%), and +0.7% over 20.
