Researchers writing in The Veterinary Record assess how African swine fever could reach China, which holds more than half the world's pigs. The virus has no vaccine and can kill up to 100% of infected domestic pigs.
Risk factors include movements of people, goods and wild boar, and small family farms that keep most of China's roughly 500 million pigs.
An outbreak in China would cut domestic pork supply and likely reduce demand for feed ingredients, while trade bans would weigh on global hog and meat prices. The article describes a risk rather than an outbreak, so the price effect is limited for now.
