The Grain Industry of WA's season summary puts the 2017 state grain harvest at 14.27 million tonnes, up about 5 million tonnes from initial July estimates but below 2016's record 18.2 million. Wheat fell 25% from 2016 due to dry conditions in the north and northeast, and the oat crop dropped 48%.
Barley fell about 9% and canola fell more than 11%.
Lower oat and wheat output in Western Australia reduces local feed grain supply, while late rains improved overall volumes. Plantings for 2018 are expected to shift toward oats, barley and legumes, which may ease future tightness.
