The Mexican peso fell to 14-month lows against the US dollar after the US announced steel and aluminum tariffs on Mexico. USD/MXN rose from 19.80 to 20.04 before easing to about 19.92.
Mexico responded by announcing equivalent duties on US products including pork, apples, grapes, blueberries and cheeses.
A weaker peso raises the cost of US feed and meat imports for Mexican buyers, which can cut US export demand for corn and pork. Mexican retaliation on US pork and other farm goods adds downside pressure on US livestock-linked prices.
