A Rabobank report by analyst Vitor Pistoia says Australia could double domestic canola crushing if it finds profitable markets for canola meal. Replacing about 1.02 million tonnes of imported feed protein could add up to 2 million tonnes of capacity, lifting domestic processing from about 25% to 50% of the crop.
Feed substitution from imported soybean meal and palm kernel expeller to canola meal would tighten the import pool for those proteins and add demand for canola meal in Australia.
