DTN analyst Joel Karlin says corn futures have retreated over the past month regardless of trade woes, due to generally favorable growing conditions and some of the highest corn crop ratings ever for this time of year. Some analysts are raising 2018 U.S. yield estimates to as high as 180 bpa versus USDA's current 174 bpa, which would beat the record 176.6 bpa set last year.
Expectations of a larger U.S. crop add bearish pressure on corn prices, and the trade expects USDA to raise yield estimates through the season if weather holds, which would weigh on the seasonal low.
After 357 past bearish weather events, Corn moved a median -0.3% over 5 sessions (44% higher; middle half -2.2% to +1.3%), and -0.5% over 20.
