China's July grain imports fell sharply after Beijing imposed tariffs on U.S. shipments. Sorghum imports dropped 62.5% to 220,000 tonnes, corn fell 63.7% to 330,000 tonnes, and wheat fell 43% to 140,000 tonnes.
Chicago corn and wheat futures rose 7.4% and 9.8% from July 6 to month-end.
China is a major outlet for U.S. sorghum and a large buyer of U.S. corn and wheat, so the drop shifts demand to other origins and cuts U.S. export sales. Higher international prices also reduced Chinese buying, which supports futures.
