A Columbia CGEP commentary says US natural gas storage is about 700 Bcf below normal, with consumption and exports growing faster than production. It warns that the market is underpricing the risk of winter price spikes at Henry Hub and regional basis points.
The paper also notes that consumers are underhedged.
A structural storage deficit means limited cushion against cold weather, which supports gas prices through winter. Higher gas costs feed through to energy-intensive feed milling and ethanol co-product economics.
After 155 past bullish macro events, Natural Gas moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (51% higher; middle half -4.0% to +7.1%), and +2.0% over 20.
