Twelve barges carrying corn broke away after the towboat Kevin Michael hit a dike near Lock and Dam 25 on the Upper Mississippi on September 26. The lock was closed for about 15 hours and intermittently over the following week, and salvage work closed it again on October 5.
No one was injured and there was no environmental damage.
Lock closures temporarily slow corn barge movements on the Upper Mississippi, but this incident was resolved in October and has little lasting effect on corn prices.
