China plans to buy an additional 1.9 million tonnes of palm oil from Malaysia over five years, about 400,000 tonnes per year. Industry consultant MR Chandran said the purchases are unlikely to lift crude palm oil prices given high global inventories.
He noted China may simply shift volume away from Indonesia.
The deal mainly reallocates existing Chinese import demand between Malaysia and Indonesia rather than adding net demand. With stocks elevated, the price impact is expected to be limited.
After 67 past neutral trade events, Palm Oil moved a median +0.0% over 5 sessions (51% higher; middle half -1.1% to +1.3%), and +0.6% over 20.
