Crude palm oil prices fell for a second day after the European Union published rules restricting palm oil use in biofuels, with certification requirements taking effect June 10. Chicago soybean oil and Bursa Malaysia palm futures also declined, with palm closing down 1.9% at RM2,017 a tonne.
The EU restriction removes palm oil demand from the biofuel market, pressuring palm and related vegetable oil prices, while weaker soyoil adds further downward pressure. Lower prices squeeze palm byproduct margins such as stearin and glycerine.
