Decision Innovation Solutions published its Iowa ethanol gross production margin update for February 2019, using USDA-AMS weekly cash prices for Iowa corn, ethanol and DDGS. The report compares February margins across 2017 to 2019 and assumes standard dry-mill yields.
It notes that the ethanol crush spread depends on the relationship between corn, ethanol and DDGS values.
Ethanol plant margins determine how hard plants run and how much corn and DDGS they buy, so shifts in the crush spread feed into corn demand and DDGS supply. Buyers can read the margin level as a signal of processing demand.
After 770 past neutral report events, Corn moved a median +0.2% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.1% to +1.6%), and +0.7% over 20.
