Texas A&M researchers have developed an ultra-low gossypol cotton variety, TAM66274, that keeps cottonseed protein safe for monogastric and fish feed. The product could expand cottonseed use beyond cattle diets, and the world produces about 46 to 47 million tonnes of cottonseed annually.
If adopted, a lower-toxicity cottonseed meal could compete with soybean and other protein meals in poultry and aquafeed formulations, a longer-term pressure on those protein prices.
