The 2019 Upper Mississippi navigation season started late on April 24 and was disrupted by flooding and lock closures, including three closures of the St. Louis Harbor. The last tow left St. Paul on November 28, and hundreds of empty barges were moved south before winter closure.
A short, disrupted season limits how much northern grain moved by barge, pushing volume onto rail and trucks and keeping northern freight costs elevated. The effect on prices is largely already reflected in 2019 flows.
