Lean hog futures gapped higher and rallied on Thursday after USDA's weekly Export Sales report showed record weekly pork bookings of 71,855 MT, led by Mexico, China and Japan. April hogs closed up 47 cents at $85.00 and the CME Lean Hog Index rose to $74.60.
Strong export demand tightens domestic pork supply outlook and supports hog prices, which also lifts feed demand for corn and soybean meal from hog producers.
After 85 past bullish trade events, Lean Hogs moved a median +0.8% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.8% to +4.5%), and +4.0% over 20.
After 224 past neutral trade events, Soybean Meal moved a median -0.2% over 5 sessions (43% higher; middle half -1.7% to +1.2%), and -0.2% over 20.
