US natural gas futures rose to a nine-month high on Friday as the front-month rolled to the more expensive October contract. Production along the Gulf Coast stayed shut after Hurricane Laura, while pipeline exports to Mexico hit a record and LNG flows began to recover.
Hurricane-related production losses and firm export demand tighten the gas balance and lift the cost of nitrogen fertilizer inputs. Higher gas prices raise costs for ammonia and urea producers, which can feed through to fertilizer prices for grain growers.
After 221 past bullish weather events, Natural Gas moved a median +3.3% over 5 sessions (61% higher; middle half -5.2% to +14.0%), and -0.3% over 20.
