NEW Cooperative began work on an $11 million barge port about two miles west of Blencoe, Iowa, with Governor Kim Reynolds attending. The co-op hopes to send its first soybean barges south by late fall and expects six to nine barges per spring delivering fertilizer and other products.
Barge traffic has been absent from this stretch of the Missouri for over 15 years.
Restoring barge access on the upper Missouri gives western Iowa farmers a lower-cost export and fertilizer route, which can narrow basis and trim transport costs.
