Fitch Ratings says the EU's 'Fit for 55' climate plan will raise carbon costs for European fertilizer and metals producers. The plan includes fewer free carbon allocations, a lower emissions cap and a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism that begins phasing in from 2023.
Higher carbon costs for EU nitrogen producers, and CBAM charges on imports from 2026, could lift European fertilizer costs over the longer term and support global nitrogen prices. Fitch expects the impact to be limited in the medium term.
