USDA's Dec. 1 Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report showed the market hog inventory at 68 million head, down 4% from 2020, and total hog inventory at 74.2 million head.
The September-November pig crop was down 4% and sow farrowings fell 5%. Analysts said the numbers came in below trade expectations.
Smaller market hog supplies and a reduced pig crop point to tighter pork supplies into 2022, which supports lean hog prices. Producers were profitable in 2021, which supports the view that supply will stay constrained.
After 100 past bullish report events, Lean Hogs moved a median -0.2% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.9% to +2.0%), and -0.4% over 20.
