BNSF Railway asked a federal court to block about 17,000 members of two unions from striking over an attendance policy effective Feb. 1.
The company said the dispute was a minor one under its collective bargaining agreements and that a strike would seriously disrupt interstate and international commerce. The unions represent workers who move agricultural and industrial goods across the country.
The possibility of a rail stoppage raises the risk of delays to grain and feed ingredient shipments, which can widen basis and freight costs. The court action reduces that risk for now.
