A federal judge granted BNSF Railway a temporary restraining order blocking unions representing about 17,000 workers from striking over a new attendance policy set for Feb. 1.
The order expires Feb. 8.
The unions had threatened to walk out, which would have disrupted freight rail movements of agricultural and industrial goods.
A rail strike would have hit grain and feed shipments across the US, so blocking it removes a near-term risk to rail-dependent feed ingredient supply and basis. Prices are unlikely to move sharply unless the dispute resumes after Feb. 8.
