Russia's government has suspended fertilizer exports, a move that analysts expect to threaten supplies in the EU, South America and Africa and eventually raise prices for US farmers. Belarus is also not exporting potash because of problems moving product through the Klaipeda port in Lithuania.
Analysts say the halt could be long-lasting.
A export halt from two major potash and nitrogen suppliers removes a large share of readily exportable nutrient supply, which pushes urea and potash prices higher. Feed grain producers face higher crop input costs in the next planting cycle.
After 129 past bullish policy events, Urea moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (47% higher; middle half -1.3% to +2.3%), and +1.4% over 20.
