The European Parliament's Environment Committee approved on 16 January 2023 the political agreement reached in December 2022 between Parliament and the Council on the EU regulation against imported deforestation. The rule requires due diligence proof that products such as palm oil, beef, soy, coffee, cocoa, and timber did not come from deforestation or forest degradation.
A full Parliament vote is scheduled for late March.
Exporters of palm oil, soy, and beef to the EU will face traceability costs and possible shipment restrictions, which could shift demand and pricing for these commodities. The regulation is a structural policy shift rather than an immediate supply shock.
