The EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains entered into force on 29 June 2023. It requires companies exporting or placing palm oil, cattle, soy, coffee, cocoa, timber, rubber and derived products on the EU market to show those goods were not produced on land deforested or degraded after 31 December 2020.
The main obligations apply after an 18-month transition.
Compliance costs and smaller traceable supply pools could reduce EU-bound demand for palm oil and soy over time, which is bearish for those markets. Exporters may redirect volumes to non-EU buyers, pressuring prices.
After 400 past bearish policy events, Palm Oil moved a median -0.0% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.1%), and +0.2% over 20.
