Global rice markets are in turmoil after India banned non-basmati white rice exports on July 20, pushing up global prices. The IMF has urged India to reconsider, and the government may allow government-to-government sales, especially to West African buyers.
The ban has shifted demand toward Vietnam, Pakistan and Thailand and could reverse if India allows G2G sales. Until then, import-dependent buyers face higher and more volatile rice prices.
After 189 past bullish trade events, Rough Rice moved a median +0.2% over 5 sessions (52% higher; middle half -1.7% to +2.4%), and +1.0% over 20.
