The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) entered into force on 29 June 2023 and prohibits companies from placing products on the EU market unless they are deforestation-free, degradation-free and legally produced. It also makes exporting such products from the EU illegal.
The rule covers seven commodities: wood, soy, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, beef and rubber.
Compliance costs and traceability demands could redirect soy and palm oil flows toward buyers outside the EU and tighten supply of compliant volumes. The effect on prices is uncertain until enforcement details are clear.
