USDA APHIS restricted imports of animal commodities from or through Costa Rica, effective July 14, 2023, after New World screwworm was diagnosed in a dog. Ruminants and swine are banned, while pet dogs and certain other animals are allowed with inspection and treatment certificates.
The restriction is limited to Costa Rica and small animal categories, so the direct effect on US feed and livestock prices is minimal. It does signal screwworm spreading in Central America, which could raise the risk of wider animal health restrictions later.
