FAO has issued an anticipatory action plan for October 2023 to March 2024 to address El Niño impacts on agriculture and food security. Forecasts show a greater than 80% chance El Niño persists through March-May 2024, with strength comparable to the six strongest events on record.
The plan calls for urgent funding for identified at-risk countries.
A strong El Niño raises the risk of drought in southern Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America and floods in other areas, which can cut maize and rice output and support prices. The humanitarian funding call itself does not move markets.
