USDA confirmed the first US livestock case of New World screwworm since 1976, in a three-week-old calf in Texas about 100 miles from the Mexican border. The response includes a 20 km quarantine zone, increased sterile fly releases, border trapping and wildlife surveillance.
The US cattle herd stood at 86.2 million head, the lowest since 1951.
Screwworm can cut calf births and milk output and adds monitoring and treatment costs for ranchers, tightening an already small herd. Further detections could raise beef and cattle price expectations.
