Bank Negara Malaysia said the ringgit was the only regional currency to strengthen against the US dollar, gaining 0.6% since February 26. Average daily FX volume rose to US$17.6 billion from US$15.5 billion a year earlier, driven partly by coordinated exporter and government-linked company flows.
A firmer ringgit lowers the local cost of Malaysian palm oil exports priced in dollars and eases ringgit-denominated input costs. The effect on prices is modest and depends on whether the flows persist.
