China's pork output fell 0.4% year on year to 15.83 million tonnes in January-March, the first quarterly decline since 2020, as farmers slaughtered fewer pigs. Hog slaughter fell 2.2% and cash hog prices rose to about 15.2 yuan per kg from 13.5 yuan in late February.
Lower slaughter and output tighten pork supply in the largest pork market, supporting hog prices and reducing near-term demand pressure on feed. Supply is still expected to exceed demand, so the price gain may be limited.
