Mexico and Belize are developing a sanitary control mechanism to allow certified Belizean cattle to be imported into Mexico for immediate slaughter and terminal fattening. Mexico currently imports about 5,000 certified cattle annually from Orange Walk County under an existing protocol, and the update would add more certified producers who pass tuberculosis, brucellosis and tick testing plus Mexican inspection.
Expanded access to Belizean cattle modestly supports Mexico's domestic feedlot raw material supply, a small factor for regional feeder cattle flows with limited effect on US or global prices.
