On 18 December 2024, the Council of the EU formally adopted the one-year postponement of the imported deforestation regulation. The European Parliament had voted 546 to 96 in favour on 17 December.
The rules now apply from 30 December 2025 for large operators and traders and from 30 June 2026 for SMEs.
Formal adoption makes the delay legally final, so palm oil and soy trade to the EU continues without new deforestation-proof requirements until late 2025. Price implications are minimal in the near term.
