India's commerce ministry lifted the ban on exports of 100% broken white rice (HS code 10064000) effective immediately, according to a March 7 notification. Food Corporation of India stocks stood at 34 million tonnes of milled rice in February, well above the buffer norm.
The reopened exports are expected to pressure prices of 5% and 25% white rice from Pakistan, Vietnam and Myanmar. Large state stocks reinforce a bearish outlook for global rice prices.
After 100 past bearish policy events, RICE moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.7% to +1.6%), and +0.1% over 20.
