India's food ministry has recommended lifting the May 2022 export ban on wheat-based products such as flour, maida and sooji, initially allowing about 1 million tonnes. The proposal follows ample government wheat stocks of 30.46 MT against a 20.52 MT buffer norm, and a tepid response to the FCI open market sale scheme.
Reopening Indian wheat product exports would add demand for wheat in export markets in Africa, the Gulf and South Asia, which is mildly supportive for wheat prices. The scale is modest relative to global trade, so the impact is limited to regional flour and wheat flows.
