China said it will lower tariffs on a range of Canadian agricultural products as part of a deal tied to Prime Minister Carney's Beijing visit. Beginning in March, China will remove some retaliatory tariffs on Canadian canola meal, lobsters, peas and crabs, and will also cut tariffs on canola seed.
In return, Canada established a tariff-rate quota allowing 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles a year at a reduced rate.
The U.S. imports about 3.5 million tons of Canadian canola meal a year for dairy and feed use. If more Canadian meal is diverted to China, U.S. supplies could tighten and prices could rise, though China's shrinking hog herd may limit demand.
