The Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers says feed costs have risen 45% in recent months because of scarce imported inputs, including maize germ, soybean meal, canola and sunflower cake. Maize, about 40% of feed formulas, is up 45% since early last year, and Kenya's maize deficit is covered by imports.
Imports from outside the COMESA bloc also face a 10% duty.
Kenya's import dependence means regional and global supply tightness and duties pass directly into local feed costs. Strong import demand for maize and oilseed meals supports prices for these feed ingredients.
