A Rural Alberta Report article describes a new analysis that puts the cost of a single week of rail and port disruption during peak export season at up to $540 million for Canada's grain sector. It notes that more than 70 per cent of Canadian grain production is exported and most of it moves by rail.
The piece says farmers bear much of the loss through weaker basis, slower cash flow and longer grain storage.
Disruptions would weaken prairie basis and delay farmer sales, which can pressure cash prices. The report adds to pressure on Ottawa to change labour rules.
